So it’s been a month since I told my husband about all my secret debt. I’m feeling blah today because I have a week until pay day and £6.25 left of my budget.
I’ve been soooo good all month, especially when I’ve wanted to go for lunch or buy a new top I’ve resisted and stayed strong. I’ve cancelled plans with people if I know it involves extra petrol etc. Then last night my husband was asking how I was doing with my budget so I showed him and he was annoyed that I’d taken £15 from my savings to pay for 2 work things I hadn’t budgeted for. I didn’t think it would be an issue but now feel like I’ve messed up again. He told me I could have used the joint account and that savings need to be left. I see his point but feel like I’m back on the naughty step again now so frustrating I don’t think he realises how hard all this is 😔
I wlll receive a good wage this month as I’ve worked super hard. We have a budget planner in place just feel like I’ve failed in the first month.

  • I think you’ve made a really great start. Just admitting that you have debt must have been hard.

At least you will be aware about savings next time. You say this is to pay for “2 work things”, does your employer reimburse these items so you can replace savings? Is there much left that you need to buy this week with the £6.25 remaining?

Maybe post up an soa so the good people here can help you budget and cut costs.

  • It is a tricky one as it depends very much on what the work things were and whether they will be reimbursed.  The only things which come out of our joint account are household expenses so if it is entertainment stuff I would not take it out of there either.  If the savings are emergency fund or earmarked for something then it would not have come out of that either though. Were the purchases essential?

The first few months of managing your money differently and getting to grips with a budget will have ups and downs.  The ups are you are expecting a good wage next month.  What does that £6.25 have to cover?  If it is just personal expenses then I would be able to manage on that if I had to but would be turning down invites to go out etc. If it has to cover food then it could be tricky.  It is a learning curve and you won't get everything right first time.

Can you put up an soa?

  • What is an soa?
  • The £6.25 is just my leftovers for anything personal, the joint account deals with everything else
