Where do I stand on faulty headphones?

My husband bought a pair of wireless Beats headphones 29th September 2020 for my birthday which is 21st October. On 25th October 2021 one speaker stopped working. They were working perfectly two days prior and was untouched till that day. We don’t have kids so we know they weren’t handled badly. The headphones are still looking brand new with no damage anywhere that is noticeable.
Apple said to send them back to Amazon which we did. We got a message to say they could repair them for £300!!! We didn’t reply as we only saw the message a week ago and was debating our next step as the warranty had only expired 26 days prior before they stopped working. Today we got the headphones back unrepaired and a note to say that because we hadn’t responded they sent them back.

Can anyone give us any advice on what we can do next? £300 for repair is a lot considering the headphones cost £130 new. It’s more annoying that they stopped working so soon (not even a month) after the warranty ran out. This has really put me off buying Beats headphones again in the future.

First of all, whilst you bought them from the Amazon website was Amazon themselves the seller or was it a Market Place vender? If you are unsure you can go into the invoice in your Amazon account for that order and it'll say... dont just follow the link to the product as many have multiple sellers and who's listed first can change day to day.
As the item is over 6 months old then the obligation is on you to show to the seller that the goods are faulty/not appropriately durable etc rather than them to prove its miss use etc. This is normally achieved via an independent engineers report the cost of which you can add to your claim assuming it supports your case.
Before doing any such thing its always best to speak to the vendor first as at times they may prefer to get their own/the manufacturer to look at it instead.
At a price of £130 it may be worth considering if risking more money on an engineer report is worth it or not.
Personally I'd also go to apple/beats and see what their quote for fixing them are but I suspect they are considered disposable rather repairable sadly.0 -
If you're going down the repair route - look up some local electronics repair shops. Not a huge number of them around any more, but they'll probably be cheaper than Apple. (wouldn't be hard).0
