Can I buy buildings insurance on a property I do not live in but my mum does?

Hello,

I own a property outright (with no mortgage) and wish to move my mum into it in order for me to ensure she is ok in her later years since my dad passed away. My mum will not be paying me any rental but will pay for her own utility bills, contents insurance etc.. As I own the property, I wish to purchase the buildings insurance. Is this possible without 'landlords insurance' as my mum will not be a tenant?  I and my family live in a different property.

As the owner of the property, you have an insurable interest and can therefore take out insurance to protect your asset.

As the arrangement is a little out of the ordinary, a Broker may be the best way to arrange the correct cover.  It may not fall into the limits of standard online policies as you'll be neither owner-occupier nor landlord operating under AST.

Try LV+ - I have a policy with them for a "second home occupied by family" situation.

Does your family occupy your 2nd home on a tenancy agreement? i.e. pay rental?
