Mac Desktop Restart Fail

I have a relatively old Mac Desktop from 2011, I think. It's worked perfectly until recently. Now when I switch on, it starts to boot up, and I get a white screen with the loading bar showing progress. It then freezes during this process and shuts down. I've tried to restart in Recovery Mode (pressing Command+R) but this doesn't do anything other than seemingly accelerate a shut down. I've tried Googling what to do, but everything seems to ask me to enter Recovery Mode, which I can't seem to do. Any other options?

Sorry if I may be repeating what you may have done already, but have you reset the PRAM? Not a tip I picked up from mumsnet . This was something which was a thing to do on my very first iMac in the year 2000.Also it may be the startup disk which could be overloaded .Having said all of that , the support from apple these days is very good and the info how to contact them should be on their website . They do phone you back also.
May be worth a shot ..0
