Apple watch esim?

I have just got a Series 7 applewatch.
My main phone is on 3 and my 2nd phone is with giffgaff (iphone).

Do i need to be an existing customer of EE/02/Vodaphone to get an esim for the apple watch?

The whole thing is not as easy as i expected.
