Different Qualities of Astro Turf / Artificial grass? Please suggest

Hi all

I have a patch of land at the side of my house that I want to lay artificial grass (astroturf) on.  Knowing nothing of this I was chatting happily to my pal down the pub the other day telling him my intentions and he said to me "There are loads of different qualities of fake grass you know.  If you don't know what you're buying you could end up with a piece of junk that fades in the daylight and looks like a wet carpet after a few months".  It was only later that night when I got home and thought to myself that he's probably right.  Of course, like anything, there must be a rubbish option and a quality option, but how does one tell? If it was a home appliance I'd ask around.  Look online etc but I can't find too much in the way of recommendations for AstroTurf.  Therefore, I wonder if you guys can enlighten me.  I assume there are different thicknesses, different grades etc. Even better...If somebody could actually recommend a good online brand that would be great.  I did look in a couple of local builders' yards around where I live but I'm now bothered that I may buy a bad quality option.  I also noticed that the couple I have seen locally have been 4m wide, whereas the piece I want is 4114  x  3352 in size.

Thanks in advance all.

4m wide is fine for your 3352 width.

Your friend is right, they can be very different.

I had 30 decent samples from one company.  We had them all
outside checking which one looked most like grass and also feeling them - what would feel best under foot.  Some of them are really rough, or shiny.

I've used these guys.  They say they're trade. I am trade so had no issue ordering.  As is inevitable, I ended up with the most expensive grass but chose 40mm instead of 50mm as I felt the 50mm looked like it needed a trim.  Very pleased with it so far!

We did have samples from a local carpet shop when we were buying carpet and thought we'd decided on something they were selling but there was a huge difference in quality - it was a bit embarrassing.

There is indeed a big variance in quality. The easiy way to check is to turn it over and look at the backing/stiching.
