I casually asked my wife the other night about her Tesco current account, they are closing them all by 29th November.

She said I'll just leave it and let it go, I had other ideas. She now has £125 coming her way for less than 10 mins inputting her details for a switch to Halifax.

    When did you apply?

Halifax are telling me that Tesco moved the last switch date forward to the 22nd (not the 30th) and no applications were accepted from the 12th onwards (not after the 15th as per the Tesco correspondence).

Tesco deny all knowledge of anything.

    Something's not right.....

Had notification that Tesco would close my wife's account on 29th November, that was early last week.
So a switch was instigated to Halifax on 13th November (Saturday) on 15th (Monday) we had notification the switch will happen on 23th November the earliest chosen date.
Also on Monday wife had text from Tesco to say a switch had been instructed and they would transfer funds, DD's bla bla the usual stuff on the chosen switch date.
Nothing about no can do, all seems easy and straightforward.

Thanks Brewer21, that's useful to know.
  • I must confess as someone who has had several current accounts for decades I feel switched off by all these Switching offers that are saturating the banking world these days. I can't be bothered to spend hours or days re-setting up dozens of direct debits, payment details and lots of other stuff and then risk my finances going awry just to pocket a few quid. I think my time is worth more than that.
I switched for the first time recently. Prior to that, I started banking with one organisation in 1987, initially with a sole account, added some savings, and just over 10 years later y now husband and I opened a joint account with them too. I’d been delighted with the service I’d had, the accounts until recently paid at least some interest, and there were some added (free) benefits too. Over the last couple of years though first the interest disappeared, and then the benefits, and as a result I started questioning whether my loyalty was now as well placed as previous. Cutting to the chase, we decided to switch the joint account to Santander to take advantage of both an account which will give us something in return, and the current £130 switching bonus. Instigated the switch by opening the new account and selecting the switch option, and I think the entire process from opening the website to getting the “you’ve been approved” screen took between 10-15 minutes. Everything else happened automatically. Nothing has “gone awry” and I even still have my history with my old bank as my 34 year old sole account remains with them.  That gives an equivalent hourly rate of £520 an hour if my maths are correct, and I’m pretty sure that my time is NOT worth more than that! 😂

It IS daunting - and had our old provider not decided to strip away any benefit of remaining with them we would probably have stayed put. However, experience now tells me that the concern over doing it is unwarranted. One of those things you only really understand once you have been through the process I think!

And the £125 landed in her Halifax account today.
Also today Yodel delivered the case of Virgin wines, that was for me switching my last TSB account into my second Virgin current account.
One bank I've never switched to yet is Santander, it's about the only one left to try.🤑
