We are just enquiring about out legal rights in this matter. I can see a court just instantly throwing it out but it's causing both of us a lot of stress in the mean time.

    What can we do?

I get the impression that you are enquiring about the chances of getting some financial compensation for the stress caused. Is that the case?

Why do people jump to this conclusion?  I take it that the OP is concerned about an uncaring profiteer potentially taking them to court and ruining their record of financial worthiness for a ridiculous mistake.

It isn't hard to see the difference between posts from people wanting to resolve a problem vs those who appear to be more interested in the basis for 'legal' action than they are in fixing the problem.
This post pushed the buttons for the 2nd scenario...
If the OP wants to get it fixed then posting enough details to get help will be the best way forward, if they really just want to know about their 'legal rights' then it has been answered above, send in a written complaint, wait 8 weeks then take it to the Ombudsman if it has not been resolved, and perhaps get £50 for the stress.
That is really all there is in this from a 'legal' perspective.

@MWT - as to a ridiculous situation causing stress - well everyone has different triggers.  I live near an airport and have on occasion woken up in a panic because of the potential for a plane dropping on our house.  Ridiculous of course as incredibly unlikely.  But to semi quote Dumbledore - just because it's all in my head doesn't mean it isn't real.

I suggest it is you that are jumping to a conclusion.

If you read my post carefully, I said 'I get the impression' and asked if financial compensation was the aim.

However you state 'I take it that the OP etc etc'. Is that not jumping to a conclusion?

As said earlier, why mention  'court proceedings' and 'stress' for an obvious error that happens frequently when companies rely on computer generated bills.

  • I think in this instance "I take it..." is another way of saying "The way I read it..." - and that is the way I read it too in fact - that the OP is scared that their supplier may maintain that this bill is correct, and try to take them to court over it. Hence them saying that they imagined it would simply get thrown out, but it is causing stress in the meantime.

I suspect the reason that a lot of people assume that compensation is the name of the game is because for a fair proportion of posters on this board, and indeed sometimes on other boards on the forum to, it IS. As soon as something goes wrong, the first thought it "what can I get out of this" rather than "how can I sort this out".
