Gmail mystery

Been using Gmail for yonks via Thunderbird on laptop but now I'm on a Chromebook using the plain vanilla Gmail app.  

When I was using Tbird, I'd start entering an addressee to an email and up would come a list of possibles from (I assume) my contacts list.  And I could go through my contacts list every now and then, deleting the unwanted ones which I assume had been added automatically from incoming emails (to which I'd replied?).

However, now if I open "contacts" in the Gmail app, the ones that appear are those on my phone.  And if I start entering an addressee, the suggestions that come up seem to be from ages ago (years in some cases!).  I don't seem to be able to find anywhere the contacts that were in my "contacts" when using Tbird.

What's happened, and how can I sort it?

Thunderbird contacts are not gmail contacts unless exported to gmail.

You were editing the wrong contacts list. I doubt thunderbird used the gmail contacts list, maybe imported it occasionally but not exported it to it.

Go back to thunderbird and manually add the contacts to google. If you have no access they are lost.

Or if you have lots of new contacts in thunderbird, export them to google.  Google has a merge contacts function
