Insurance NCD jiggery pokery?

I've ordered a new car, to be collected early December. I need to sell my old car shortly after collecting the new one. My current insurer's quote to change to the new car is absolutely bonkers, but I've lined up another company who offer something much more sensible.

I have lots of no claims bonus ("12+ years" for the past several years of renewal quotes).

I presume I can't share the no claims discount across more than one policy? So does this mean that for practical purposes I need to SORN (or sell) the old car and stop its insurance before the insurance starts on the new car?

You can sometimes have both cars on the same policy for a short time whilst selling the old car, although when I've done this it was done by adding the new car onto the same policy rather than taking out a new policy.

Have you checked the cost of cancellation? If change of vehicle is expensive cancellation may be too.

One option is to add your new car as a Temporary Additional Vehicle, but then that means amending your "lined up policy" which may incur fees depending on how far you went with lining it up.

In terms of the fundamental question though, you are correct, NCD cannot be split, combined or used on more than one policy at a time. Therefore if your new policy has been based on a 12+ year NCD your old policy must be cancelled before it takes effect. Hence the old car will either need to be SORNed, added to your new policy as a TAV or have a new policy bought on it.

when in a similar situation, I called the new insurance Co and asked if I could use my NCD on the new car but the previous car and insurance wouldn't be going for 4 weeks.

Chap on the phone said he'd check with his boss, then came back and said all OK in this scenario - I asked them to email this to me and they did so I felt covered in the event of a disagreement.

     I hope this helps
