Car tax still being taken when I no longer own the vehicle

My car was written off in August and I've been paid out by the insurance company. I had assumed that the insurance company would notify DVLA that a) they now own the car and b) that it's been written off.
DVLA are continuing to take road tax monthly by direct debit. I can't cancel the DD as they are also (quite rightly) debiting for my new car. The logbook (V5) has been mislaid and I can't apply for a new one as I no longer own the car. I can't write to the DVLA as I don't know the actual date when ownership changed hands. The insurance company won't answer their phones.
Any advice on how I can get this stopped?

Contact DVLA, the date of change of ownership is the date you got the money- your bank account will show it.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

DD for new car sounds very odd to me .DD was for original car .Sold/ disposed of then you Inform DVLA . they will then refund or cancel balance .New car will be a new setup .Phone DVLA on their help line .1

You should be able to cancel the DD, it's for a specific registration number at least that's what shows on my bank account for each oneRainMaker_2 said:
