Leaving a job soon after starting- issues?

Hello!

I started a new role 2 weeks ago, and it was my intention to do the role for atleast 6 months. However immediately after starting the role the perfect opportunity came up. I applied for it and have been offered the role.

it is from a different department within the same organisation (both admin / project management type roles for a public sector company).

I feel very reluctant to tell my manager. I know I want to take the new job. Can I get in trouble or be disciplined? It was never my intention to leave so quickly however I think it’s the right job for me and I feel really guilty/ horrible of the current team having to rearrange the work assigned to me. I think it will be a very awkward notice period.

are there any issues/ problems I could face?

thank you.

Is the other job a different grade?  Are you permanent staff?  If the answer to both is yes then they can potentially block your move.

Contact the HR department to check the situation.  Many companies have a policy of requiring a person to be in a job for a period before they can apply for other jobs.  Did you apply internally or was this an external advert?  It's possible that those interviewing you weren't aware that you had already accepted and started another job in the same organisation.

Most companies will also expext you to discuss any internal vacancies with your line manager before applying to avoid this issue. Checking with your HR department is a good idea.

If you started that recently they will probably be able to call the second choice candidate and see if they are still interested - may be less work for the company than if you stayed a bit longer.

The post was advertised such that even those externally could apply.

    Would this make a difference?

if it helps its public sector healthcare.

It’s the same grade but the new role is permanent. The current role is fixed term.

The new team have offered me the role and I have said I want to accept it. So would there be some discussions where the new team withdraw the offer?

Would this be written anywhere in a specific policy? The role was also advertised for external candidates to apply to.

Are they aware of your current role and the short time you have been there for? It may be that with discussions between departments the decision could be for you to stay put,

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Have you not informed them(new team) you already work there?

What was on the application as current employer.

It is normal when looking at internal transfers to be open once you show formal interest in another position.
  • I'm afraid that nobody can answer this except the employer. People here can guess. But they can't tell you. Regardless of sector, it depends entirely on the employer because there is no law here to help you. Some employers would allow a manager to block a transfer to another department. That may not seem fair to you, but it is legal. One thing is certain, you need to speak to them quickly because the longer this goes on the more it may cause the employer longer term issues. And if you come across poorly in that respect, you could easily end up annoying them.
