advise a prog to convert image, please.

I used to use Coral Draw (or one of Coral' progs) to convert an image so that the white parts became transparent.

If I remember correctly it converted from raster to vector image.

It is to overlay two existing diagrams (currently as pdfs but can be copied to a picture format) on to Visio layers for comparison purposes (and then more work) such that one diagram can be seen 'under' the other.

Can anyone suggest a program to create such transparent images?

I'm not sure but I remember a friend talking about inkscape but not sure if it can do what you want

From the prompt (paint) I remembered I have very little used GIMP. On checking it will create a png with transparency from an Alpha layer too so thanks problem solved.
