Just bought a house, should we change energy provider

We are set to move in to our first house next week, with the gas prices should we just stick with the existing provider or look around?

We weren’t sure of the best option, with a lot of advice being to stick with your current provider and weren’t sure if this applies to a new house.

Register with the incumbent, send opening meter readings and give DD info but decline any offers of fixed tariffs or anything other than the default Standard Variable Tariff, which will be capped until April.

There's no harm in looking around, but you'll see either nothing or a few "Go Away" prices!
Whether you want to stay or go, you still need to set up with the existing supplier at the house anyway, you have no choice initially.  You have to sign up to whoever the previous occupant happened to use, I don't know why it's like this, it's just an oddity of our silly system.

The alternative would be moving into a property that was dark and cold for a week or two, hoping that the pipes didn't freeze.

Be warned, the current supplier may well try to tell you that you “have” to sign up to a fix - that’s not true, you can, once you have registered, simply remain on the variable tariff, which, right now, will be cheaper by far than any fix anyone is likely to offer you. If they try to force your hand, simply decline.

Congratulations on your new home! 🎉 🏠

I'm just about to complete on the purchase of a new gaff. I have to suffer the indignity of sticking with Eon, who I loathe from the last time I was lumbered with them, about 15 years ago. They'll have to take the SVP from my cold dead hands.
