Tapi order change/cancellation

So I place an order with Tapi for a carpet. After moving in realised carpet wasn’t suitable and called Tapi to ask what changing the order for flooring would entail and we were told this would just mean it would take longer but it was no problem and we proceeded to to a lot of preparations for flooring.

After the store manager called and said it turns out that last information given by the dependent was incorrect, we cannot change anything and are stuck with an order of carpet we do t want to fit because we have removed skirtings, prepared the stairs for a runner and levelled the floor for laminate.

is there anything we can do?
we contacted Tapi and they offered 50% refund but that still leaves us out of pocket for £1500.

I know the T&Cs are pretty much in their favour so I’m not making myself any illusions but would like to see if my credit card or any other way not to give away that much money.

You made an order for a carpet but then prepared the floor for laminate without changing the order?

    Why?

They can deduct their costs for whatever they've made so far.

If they've cut the carpet already then they still have options to sell whatever is left (unless it's really an odd cut) and they need to limit their deductions to what it has cost them so far.  50% seems unreasonable (even with the cost of faffing around with your order) but boy did you drop one with this.

You'll need to argue the toss and prepare to go to court if they don't play ball.

Presumably because Tapi said it wouldnt be a problem to change and they acted on that advice

Do you have the exact details of the call? My guess is they dont record their calls but its certainly worth putting in a complaint that you were advised a change wasnt a problem and based on that advice have incurred costs etc (and thats without getting into the debate of if an agent of a company can change the contract (by mutual agreement)).

But why not change the order at the same time?

Clearly, anyone who knows enough to prepare a floor for laminate knows it's not the same as prepping a floor for carpet.  To ask the question, not change the order and then faff around prepping for laminate with the carpet still on the way is bizarre, no?

Do you not think this is a bit of a self-inflicted wound?

As I said I think their demands for 50% are OTT (unless the OP has some sort of weird custom carpet or custom cut that has already been made) but I think we need to be real here, the OP is the primary cause of this issue, and needs to take responsibility for it.
