Ground source heat pumps

In light of recent announcements by the government, does any one know how to access the grants for GSHP? I seem to be going round in circles on the government website.
Thanks

It's called the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) but that ends on 31st March. You'll be lucky to get an installation by then but the payments are generous if you manage it.

From April it is a lump sum, paid to the installer I believe. Full details have yet to be published but I think it is only about £6000 for a GSHP. That is not very generous compared to £5000 for an ASHP, which will cost a lot less to install.

and if its like most other schemes it will just mean it will be that much more expensive.

Current RHI grant is likely between 15k and 25k so reducing that to 6k is more likely to reduce prices....
    I think....
  • So the up-front grants only kick-off in April 2022.  At present you can get a much larger grant called the RHI but that is paid quarterly over 7 years after the installation is completed.  If you want to get the RHI your first step is to find a MCS-certified installer.

Didn't realise the RHI had got more generous mine has just finished for my ASHP and I got around £4k over 7 years. Although that was more than my heap pump cost so can't complain.

You get about 1p/kWh heat output for ASHP and 2p/kWh for GSHP.

I thought it was roughly 10p and 20p respectively, or am I misunderstanding it?

For instance, let's say you have an ASHP and expect a COP of 3, then you put in (for example) 5,000kWh of leccy, and get out 15,000kWh(t), so a gain (creation) of 10,000kWh @ 10p/kWh = £1,000pa for 7yrs. [Just a made up example.]
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

OK £15K to £25k is a lot of 2p's . not sure what mine was but it must have been more generous than that as £600 a year would have been 60000KWh .

You're right! I was going from memory. I remembered one was about twice the other but got my decimal point in the wrong place.

I wonder how many/few people GSHP's will be a practical proposition for.  We have a 150 foot long garden, but between the garden and the house is a 20 foot patio the width of the garden, and raised beds beyond the patio.  I would allow anybody to rip up the patio to get the plumbing in place and I suspect many others would feel the same.
