On 6 November, I made a £690 payment to a friend but on realising I had used their old email address, I cancelled the payment a couple of hours later. My Paypal transaction history does not give exact times but has recorded the payment and the cancellation. I thought that was the end of the matter.
On 10 November, £690 was taken by direct debit from my linked bank account with Paypal. I raised a dispute with Paypal's resolution centre who have reported there is no case to answer, or no issue as the payment was cancelled (which is what the Paypal account history shows).
I also made a phone call to my bank that is linked to my Paypal account to flag the issue and they say it is not fraud and that I need to contact Paypal (who have closed the report on my case saying there is no case to answer).
Any suggestions about how I can go about getting my money returned? Is this something that anyone has experience of? Any assistance is very much appreciated.
ETA: I will be going into a branch of my bank tomorrow (12 November) to talk about this.

Chances are it'll find its way back to you.
You could try an indemnity claim on the basis that the transaction was cancelled. I wouldn't waste my time faffing around in a branch to do it though.1 -
See what the bank has to say first.1

It is near impossible to just cancel a PayPal payment once made as it should be instant. You can cancel the money being taken from your bank or card but that doesn’t cancel the initial payment, it just overdraws your PayPal account which needs to be repaid.
if the email address was still valid the payment will be in that PayPal account. If the account was actually completely closed more than 180 days ago *and* the payment should bounce back, however it is entirely possible for a payment to be made to an email address that isn’t associated with a PayPal account , again in that instance the payment will bounce back after 30 days.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Came back online to say the money has been returned to my bank account, five days after the money was debited. Hope this information may be of use to others who may experience the same situation in the future. Thanks to all for the support that gave me the confidence that the money would reappear at some point.2
