MacBook Pro 15’

I have recently discovered my MacBook has a fault which is in the screen cable. This has been reported many times and even has a name, ‘Flexgate’. Apple has recognised the problem on the 13’ screen versions but not the 15’ one I have. Wondered if anyone has encountered this and if they have managed to get anything out of Apple? There was a class action lawsuit in the US which accused apple of selling the device knowing there was an issue. They are very unhelpful on support and say this is not a known problem when it clearly is.

I assume you bought the laptop new? How long have you had it? Who did you actually buy it from?

Yes it was new from the Apple Store in PC World. Had it since 2017

So you bought it from PC World... the fact that they put all the apple products together doesnt change the retailer.

Presumably this is the issue you are talking about:
13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program - Apple Support

Does your laptop have one of the two issues stated?

Your rights are against the retailer (PC World) and so its up to you to prove that the item has an inherent fault, the lack of a product recall/service programme from the manufacturer doesnt disprove your claim but means you cannot rely on it alone.

Be aware that as a false fault on an item the retailer has the right to decide on repair, replace or refund and if a refund is given it can be reduced to reflect the use to date... a 4 year old laptop is going to be notably reduced if a refund is given.

Have you had a quote from Apple to repair it? They undoubtably will say if you bought it from them rather than PC World then they;d be helping you more (its part of their script) but I have a friendly discussion (not claiming rights etc as those are against the retailer) and had them at least cut costs of repairs (not to nil)

PS. The class action lawsuit was dismissed in the US because it was not a safety issue and the problems tended to appear post warranty period (which in US law is effectively as long as you're assured normal operation)
  • This was never a known issue on the 15" models, only the 13" models that had a cable that was too short. So what you have is a random fault on a 4 year old product.
