Hi
This is a genuine asking for a friend post , My mate broke his ankle over in Denmark last week , I took him to the hospital where he got excellent treatment and patched up , They wouldn’t let him leave till they received proof of travel insurance which they got .
hes now been sent a letter asking for his eu medical card wich he hasn’t got , Could this be an issue ?

Without a GHIC or EHIC he will probably have to pay for some of the treatment that would, otherwise, have been free.

Not sure why your comment about a GHIC or EHIC card is relevant as OP stated that the medical costs were covered by travel insurance. OP's friend should just tell the hospital that he doesn't have a card and step back and leave the insurance company and the hospital to sort it out.JGB1955 said:Without a GHIC or EHIC he will probably have to pay for some of the treatment that would, otherwise, have been free.

The OP says that the hospital got 'proof' of travel insurance , not payment.
I expect the travel insurance have paid out less the charges covered by the GHIC. Most insurances say you must have the card and use it.

They recommend having the EHIC or equivalent card because otherwise you may be hit with charges which would have been covered by the EHIC. It's a bit like paying the excess, or having no excess, on a motor policy.

Doesn't help with the problem but why would anyone travel without one? They are free and easily available.1
