My son needs to get an external hard drive with firewire connection that he can use with a Mac at college. It needs to be 250 - 500gB. I have been looking, but am getting seriously confused. Can anyone help please?

You could try asking on one of the mac forums:
http://www.123macmini.com/
http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/
http://forums.ionmac.com/
Though this seems to meet your requirements: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Studio-Firewire-External/dp/B000W9KI42/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197439962&sr=8-4
as does this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Premium-External-Firewire/dp/B000EXLVG0/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197439962&sr=8-2
General experience of harddrives is, avoid lacie and maxtor for the sake of data integrity.
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
Western Digital MyBooks are excellent for this, used them for many years, but a little bulky, there are plenty of other portable ones, just make sure it has FireWire (preferably as well as USB, then if there is a problem you can use the USB port too).
There are other more portable ones as well, but many only come with USB.
LaCie make a large range too.0
