Ethernet network switch question

We are with Vodafone and use their modem router which has 4 ethernet slots at the back. We need 2 extra ethernet slots so can I buy a 5 port, i.e. continue to use the vodafone modem router and spill over the 2 extra required ones onto this switch? Or would it not work because all the ethernet cables need to be plugged in either the vodafone modem router or the switch?

plug the switch into the router i.e. you will have 3 devices plus the switch on the router, and then you will have effectively 4 ports on the switch. ! for whatever was originally on the router, two for the new two devices and a spare on the switch.

Had to do this with all the routers I have had in recent years. 4 is never enough. Using Netgear myself but wonder if it is the same guts as Dlink under the hood. Just plug and play.1

THank you, would you know if the connection speed is the same on the vodafone router modem as the swtich?0 -

The speed will be effectively the same as long as all of the network ports are as fast as the router. That probably means gigabit ports and there's no point in buying slower than gigabit ethernet ports in a new hub these days. Some devices will only use 100 megabits instead of gigabit but that's OK.
What you can do is the sort of thing I've done, placing the router in a central location for wifi and running one ethernet cable from the router into the living room to a switch there. Then the devices that can be cabled are connected to the switch. You can use flat cables to make it easier to run the wire for long distances along walls or under carpet.0 -
My router is in the loft to get best WiFi coverage. I have 5-ports in one bedroom and lounge and a 24-port in the office0
