Being nosy...how did he end up with 4 surnames?  Is it a "marriage of double-barrelled to double-barrelled"? Or a posh kind of Gervase Brooke St. John Hamster thing going on?
My first thought was the Portuguese naming tradition that combines surnames from mother, father and grandparents.

"A Portuguese name is typically composed of one or two given names, and a number of family names (rarely one, but often two or three, sometimes more). The first additional names are usually the mother's family surname(s) and the father's family surname(s). For practicality, usually only the last surname (excluding prepositions) is used in formal greetings."

For example Jose Mourinho is actually "José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix"

That's exactly it. Four words in the surname, three names and a "de".

24 characters including the spaces, which is fun when filling in on line forms.

One of his credit cards has his last name truncated.  And airline staff never know what to call him, as airline systems strip out the spaces leaving an unintelligible string.

There is no problem with having a different name in different places either - EXCEPT where those systems interact using your name, it *might* cause you problems, so probably better to have them the same in such places.  e.g.  If you changed it to C with the DVLA, you probably also want to update your car insurance, but you'd probably be fine having a K with your bank.
There is an expectation that innocent people will want to use the same name everywhere.

So if you change your name on your bank accounts but not on your drivers license or passport, then they'll be curious why.

You don't want them to be curious.
To a degree.   If you had your name as Robert Peterson in some places and Arnold Williams in others, that might raise questions.  If you have your name as Mark Roberts in some places and Marc Roberts in others, much less so.

Though my point was:  Who would *they* be under those circumstances?   Your bank and the DVLA are unlikely to talk to each other about you, so how would they even know?

Some banks will ask to see a passport or driving licence as proof of ID; particularly the new e-banks.

Indeed, bit of a sboolboy error by the site I bopy/pasted from, whereas https://montycasinos.com/montypython/scripts/travagent.php.html gets it right....
  • Our joint account with Barclays has Mr S + Mrs M Xxxx on the statements they produce. Our surname is actually 7 letters, but they obviously can't fit it all in.
A bit silly when you consider how long some surnames are, especially double barrelled ones.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
