No payment required, but still fined!

At the leisure centre car park I duly used my mobile to register my car, which involved giving my registration (which the automated system didn't seem to be able to understand so it took numerous attempts) and my credit card details.  The automated system  eventually informed me that no charge was due as I was in the allowance of free hours.  However, when I returned to the car a ticket had been issued.  My appeal was rejected, because I couldn't provide a photocopy!  I sent them a photograph of my mobile record, showing a lengthy call to the automated system, but that didn't satisfy them.  I now have the Notice to Owner, which states that I wasn't displaying a pay and display ticket or voucher, or parking clock.  There was no way to get a ticket over the 'phone, and no mention on any notice of needing a parking clock.  Any advice as to how to persuade them not to fine me?
