Hermes International issue

Hi,
I sent a parcel via Hermes International a few weeks ago.
This was an item sold via F/B marketplace and going from the UK to Southern Ireland.
The buyer contacted me after a couple of weeks as they had not received it, the tracking showed it had been "out for delivery" for over a week so opened a support ticket with hermes although the only option I could find on the website was to report a lost parcel.
Heard nothing for another week and now I have just had an email to say "good news, we have found your parcel" although there is no other information than that!
A second email has also come through saying that they have closed this case now as the tracking has been updated.
Checking the tracking and the only event listed since the "out for delivery" is a "return to sender" so it looks like it might be slowly making its way back to me?
It was a fairly expensive item and the postage price was pretty high so I'm wondering if there is any way to get hermes to actually deliver it to the buyer rather than return it to me?
Or, what my chances of getting a refund for the original postage cost is if they send it back to me?
I'm not even sure why they would return it rather than just deliver it (as presumably it was with the final destination carrier anyway). Although I am wondering if the buyer has not paid the customs charge or something but I can't find any details of anything like that on the hermes tracking?

It’s probably damaged… that would explain the delay and it being returned to you.0

IOSS problem? Ireland is particularly picky on that.0

No idea what the problem is as there is no details on the tracking or in the email I had from hermes.
I would have thought all the customs documents were OK so I would not expect any problems with that but again, no details have been given.

I personally would not trust Hermes to deliver a sandwich, let alone an international parcel.1
