New Home - Help!

Hi All. The purchase of my new home completed last week and I need to set up my gas and electric. The property is currently supplied by British Gas (who were appointed after the collapse of PFP - the suppliers the last owners were with). When I go on to set up an account with British Gas it only gives me 2 tariff options, both of which are fixed until December 2023.

I am confused as to whether this is a good idea or not - my understanding is that you are generally better off on the default/variable tariff as this is limited by the price cap, am I right in thinking this?

I tried phoning British Gas but they appear to have closed their enquiry line! Any advice on what I am best to do?

Thanks in Advance :)

You will need to get through on the phone somehow, do not just pick one of the fixed tariffs they offer online.
When you do get through just tell them you have moved into a property they are already supplying and you wish to remain on their capped standard variable tariff, do not be persuaded otherwise.

Contact them another way, other than by phone.
I think they prefer chat, if you can access it.
Otherwise, you could always write to them.

I'm sure they'll send you a bill at some point, or possibly a letter addressed to "The Occupier".
... and the letter will say 'sign-up online for a new account...'

...perhaps bung them an email.  ..
You cannot email BG. They withdrew that possibility ages ago. If you find an old email address in the archives, you will get an automated response saying go online.
  • Thanks everyone, that's really helpful!

There's a complaints form on their website. Use that and say that they are otherwise uncontactable. Give them your meter readings so there's a record of them. I just used that form and got an autoemail saying they will look into my query etc.
