Compatibility of Howdens doors on DIY Kitchen cabinets?

I want to fit a few tall cabinets myself (none of the fancy cabinets, just the basic tall cabinets with shelves).

Does anyone know if Howdens cabinet doors will fit onto DIY Kitchen cabinets without any issue? Does anyone have any experience of this or any advice?

If it is a straight fit then this would save me a bucket load of money. If it's not easy then I will stick with the choice of doors from DIY Kitchen.

Had door/drawer fronts from an alternative source to go on some B&Q base units. Needed to drill some holes in the cabinets for the hinge fixing screws. Not a major issue, just needed some accurate marking out (also had a little jig which helped).

  • I work as a kitchen designer for one of the major players. When someone says they just want to replace the doors, my first question is always 'is it one of our kitchens?'
It's something that's happening more and more - I think we're all becoming aware of unnecessary waste, and also keen to save money, so if there's nothing wrong with the units and it's just the doors that are a bit tired, it's a great idea.
BUT - some suppliers do a 450mm door, and some don't, so check if that will be a problem for you. The chances of the hinges lining up are slim, but as FreeBear said, it's not an insurmountable problem. Drawer fronts can be more of an issue, so check the top-to-bottom measurements carefully. You'll probably want to change the end panels and the plinth as well as the doors.
From the sound of it you are wanting to put Howdens doors on to DIY carcasses - unless the price differential on the carcasses is significant, I'd stick with Howdens for both - it seems a shame to put in brand new units and then start to muck about with them - and if you get it wrong, they won't return something you've already drilled into, so all the potential money saving will be for nought.

  • I'm trying hard to remember my interactions with kitchen companies as I also wanted tall cabinets, Howdens definitely did them but whilst the usual size came in a fixed size across brands, I don't think there is standardisation of the tall heights.
