Good morning all.
Looking for area recommendations in Newcastle for a friend. Their work will be in Jesmond; they do drive so not required to live in Jesmond (looks expensive and very nice there). Any local information and recommendations (similarly places to avoid) would be greatly appreciated.

Initially renting but has a mortgage deposit saved up just a case of how work/life balance goes. I had a look at Jesmond and it looks a lovely place; naturally I gravitated to asking the masses on MSE.0

Around Jesmond you’ve also got gosforth and long Benton that a few friends live in and like.
It’s also nice along the coast from Tynemouth to Whitley Bay but Tynemouth is $$$Few people I know live in Low Fell in Gateshead too but depends how they plan to travel to Jesmond.1 -
Being from the area I would recommend looking at North Tyneside. Shiremoor, backworth (NE27 and NE28) postcode. A lot of new housing and all with access to the Tyne & Wear Metro which goes into Newcastle, Jesmond etc every 5/10 minutes.3

North Tyneside or Gosforth would be good shouts, easy to get a Metro to Jesmond.
Jesmond itself is nice but some streets are very studenty.
Low fell is nice (it’s in Gateshead) has a very frequent bus into the city centre then walk, or change onto the Metro at Gateshead Interchange. I wouldn’t recommend driving in if living south of the river - the traffic is horrific.
Im in the north of County Durham which is lovely, and cheap to buy, but could be a pain to get into Jesmond at rush hour.1 -
I wouldn't want to be coming north into Newcastle for work, traffic is horrendous and unless you have parking space guaranteed at your place of work, parking in Jesmond can also be a nightmare.
Sandyford, Heaton and Shieldfield are all close to Jesmond although the first two are very student orientated. Shieldfield is close to the city centre, walking distance really, and closer to Jesmond which again is walking distance. There are a couple of newly built student blocks but they're in the minority. Bear in mind that the suburbs which immediately border the city, so Jesmond and Shieldfield, don't have great public transport links. The Metro, although great if you're in easy walking distance of a station, serves the north and south of Jesmond but there are huge areas where walking some distance to a bus stop is your only public transport option. Buses don't run through Shieldfield after 6 pm or at all on Sundays. Jesmond buses aren't much better. Heaton has a very good bus service which runs into late evening and all weekend.
In common with any city, the best areas are going to be expensive. I'd look at South Gosforth. Excellent public transport, good local shops and pubs and property types from low rise flats (research Tyneside flats, they're late Victorian/Edwardian purpose built flats, peculiar to Tyneside) to terraced, semi's and the occasional detached. There's a good community and it's often described as a village although it's a suburb. Lots of young professionals start out there because you get more bang for your buck than in Jesmond. South Gosforth is adjacent to Jesmond so commute would be short.1 -
Places to avoid in Newcastle?
surely the answer is all of it?
It’s just a joke geordies, just a joke.1 -
Not much of a joke if no-one laughs.
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

Newcastle is one of the great cities, even a dyed in the wool southern softie like me likes it up there. Some absolutely lovely scenery in the vicinity as well.0
