Child Tax Credits Overpayment Dispute

Wondered if anybody else has been in similar position...

I've just received a notice from HMRC advising me of an overpayment penalty, however this is in relation to my account that closed back in 2016.  At that time, I was told that I had been overpaid and entered into an agreed repayment plan, which I have kept up with for 5 years.  So was surprised to receive this letter out of the blue!  I called up to query this and was told that "it had been missed" at the time but I was still bound to pay it.  I am obviously going to dispute this, but would like to know if anyone else has experienced similar?
