Not such a big if.  I asked two years ago; two households have smart meters that are dumb, in another two cases the installer came to install a smart meter but abandoned the attempt due to lack of signal.
Without your village name I can't see the topography nor search for nearby Arqiva smart meter towers. ;)  and 5 homes/locations in a village do not prove a rule.
In any case more smart meters with mesh comms will be needed installed to make a mesh network to get signals.  Not all smart meters include the mesh aiui.

You may need to get the village/parish council on it and encourage a tower to be built to serve the village for smart meters and (maybe) mobile phones too?

Do we know what frequencies are used for the WAN and what type of modulation?
https://www.smartme.co.uk/technical.html has a list of frequencies used in the UK.  Modulation may be stated on any Ofcom licences.  Naturally a proprietary encryption will be used to protect the data.

I note that meters around Fylingdales will be using an alternative WAN frequency (clear of the radar interferer) early next year (2022).

You mention being able to search for towers, is this available online? I've tried to find some sort of interactive map like the mobile phone companies provide detailing coverage but there doesn't seem to be any.
