Martins advice is to do nothing, and go on the Cap. However, my present 2yr fixed term with SSE ends 10 Dec. New offer is either Standard at about 774 Pounds/yr -(est 65 per mth) or 3yr fixed v2 at 1072/yr--est 90 /mth. I'm a pensioner, 80 yrs old, on State pension only income. I'm very careful with my energy use--Electric, and Gas CH and Cooking. Bearing in mind the present Cap of 1277 and probable new Cap of 1600 +---would I not be better off going onto the v2 3yr fixed offer? What arguments speak against that.

It's a price cap on unit cost and standing charge rates NOT overall cost, to you! That depends entirely on how much you use in kWhs?
Do you know how much you use, on average, per annum in kWhs for each fuel? How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
OP what are the rates involved .

This isn't the Board to ask this question - maybe a Mod could move it to 'Energy' who are a really helpful Board. Though do suggest could you supply KiloWatHours (KWH) consumption annually - you should get this from your bills0

Ofgem really havent helped here with their "cap" wording, the number of people out there who think the £1277 is the most they will ever be billed under the cap is more than likely significant.1
