    4 gallons?
    Which isnt a lot

Go look at your washing up bowl or sink

Fill a bowl 3 times a day, rinse a few things under a tap and you are easily into the multiples of gallons in a day

My dishwasher goes on every 2 or 3 days and uses 4 gallons and no tea towels

I wash up once a day and don't often fill the bowl up.
Left to air dry so no tea towels either.
I also understand that even people with dishwashers also need to rinse sometimes before running the machine as well.

No, I went and did a convert thing and saw it was 32 pints. I thought mine used a lot less but without checking and just reading the average, it seems it uses more.
I used to do the fill a sink, wash everything, then rinse in a bowl of water and it appears I've been kidding myself about the difference in doing that...I thought I'd be suing less, turns out I'm actually using more.

I have a combi boiler. I wash up 2 people dishes every 2 days, I drink tea from the same 2 cups over this period and use the same spoon to stir. I usually wash up when I'm cooking the evening meal as I can also wash up the things I've cooked with that evening and keep the water to wash up the things we've just eaten from later.

However I like the bowl 3/4 full and I switch to a cold water trickle to rinse suds off, so doesn't use any electric but gas is minimal, water usage not great.

As for dishwashers I have a long standing argument with my brother that they cost more over a month than washing up with a bowl. He being bright/astute says no as the water usage must be more for manually, then there is the cost of gas etc, etc.
I then bring up the cost of washing up liquid, I buy 4x bottles at £2 at worst that a £10 a year. He pays at best £10 every 2-3 months for the dishwasher tablet thing's, which appear to be wrapped in plastic and gets washed down our water way's. Then there is salt/rinse aid stuff, then there is the cost of repairs or buying a new one. So you pay more for convince I think, however I like a wash up and a gaze out the window a few times a week.

As for cutting back on electric, if you're cutting back on things  like washing up hot water times, you've clearly got rid of the kids playstations, large TV's, freeview/skybox's, pop round other people's house for a cuppa, bought a more energy efficient fridge/freezer, laptops and PC's.... I suggest you start shaving your heads so there is no use for the hair dryer and charging your mobile phones at work.

well, just looked and it uses 21 pints per wash, that is not brilliant, but it's not bad considering I load it up fully and rarely have a frivolous wash. The amount the dishwasher can hold is a lot higher than the stacking space at the side of the sink so I've justified it in my head again...And honestly, I really dislike washing up, I'm not that great at it and the dw does a much better job.

Looking at that article all i can see is that it would cost a lot more for me to run a dishwasher than hand wash .

Which is all well & good, but I don't have room for one and it's not really worth the cost when I live alone, wash-up using a bowl and don't make endless cups of tea or coffee during the day.

  • I love my dishwasher. We run it once a day instead of washing up three times a day. Saves loads of time and energy and the budget tablets work just fine costing about 10p a day.
I hate it when I go to someone's house and the cups have grubby bits around the base and handles where they have washed up by hand .

  • I wash up once a day and boil approx 1.25 litres to which I add some cold water. Enough to do all my washing up. Only need to use a tea cloth when putting away if I find any spots of water that haven't drained away.
