My wifes friend has scrimped and scraped all year to buy her husband an xbox 360 for christmas.Money wont stretch to a "Live account" but she would really like the Microsoft update for it that was released this month.Apparently it includes DIVX or XVID support? Is there another way she can get the update?

I thought some games had free 48hours with them, not sure about a month.
I know you get a free month with the console but I'm certain they don't even have the internet so that's not an option for her. Thanks anyway.0 -

There are two levels of XBOX Live account. 'Silver' which is free and lets you download firmware updates such as the DIVX/XVID update you mention, as well as XBOX Live Arcade games, demos and so on, and 'Gold', which you have to pay for, which lets you play multiplayer games via XBOX live.
To get the DIVX/XVID update, your friend just needs to plug the 360 into a router (via Ethernet), and sign-up for a free silver account. Once they sign-in to XBOX live it should download the latest dashboard update, then, if they put in a disk with an XVID/DIVX movie on it, it should tell them it needs to download a codec. If they click OK, it will then proceed to download the necessary software to play XVID/DVIX and that's it ... no spend required!0 -
I'd wait a little while before they apply the patch anyway. Last years patch killed boyfriends XBOX 360. His replacement one has just died after applying the latest patch. He's not a happy chap....Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.0

When you create you gamertag, and go online you automatically get one months gold membership free , so you can download demos etc.also silver account lets you get updates too0

IF your friend doesn't have an Internet connection why would she need the divX support? I presume you want it for downloaded media?
I suppose they might borrow copies actually
Anyway best way I can think is to take the 360 around a friend or neghbours house who doesn't mind, hook it up to the internet sign up for a free silver account, then let it downalod and install the update won't take more than an hour tops.
Basically use a regualr ethernet cable, might have got one if the 360 is a premium, otherwise any person with the ienternet will have at least one connecting the modem to the PC or router to PC.
Connect the 360 to the router or modem as if the 360 were a PC, then follow the instructions on the 360 dashboard in the live tab.
Good luck with it.

Apparently you can download a copy from thye micrsoft site or again ive heard that new games have the update included but i cant confirm it, but if you dont have a LIVE account why do you want the update since it contains stuff for the marketplaceNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

Great I got to see a xbox thread here. Am planning to get one before christmas but the thing is the choice is becoming difficult for me amongst the Playstation and Xbox. My family is for the Xbox though but its issues like these updates, cooling off issues which I have come across at other places that have made me think about the buy. Is it worth a try?0
