    Thanks you @mr_stripey.

If you did not put this irregular spend into pots would you just spend it?

Yes, I guess so - although not always conciously. It seems to just get absorbed into "spending". I appreciate that this boils down to a failure to budget properly - and there are a multitude of ways for one to budget "properly".

In my YNAB, I have categories (or pots) for all of my regular monthly bills (the easy bit really). Also another bunch of pots for "Living Expenses" - for example Groceries, Fuel, Take aways, Football matches etc

Then another set of savings for things like Christmas, kids birthdays and holidays with annual targets.

Another set for long term sinking funds (kids university, emergency fund etc)

Each time I get paid I allocate funds to each of these pots
Every time I spend, or a bill is paid, I add the transaction and allocate the category and the amount is updated accordingly.

Ultimately, it is just a fancy spreadsheet with a slick user interface but it is backed up with good helpdesk and technical support.

  • Hi!
First-timer here, I found this thread while Googling something else.
My YNAB renewal date is quickly approaching, and I will continue paying for it! - Why?
Because, being totally blind and relying on apps/websites being accessible to me, there is no other app - and I tried many! - that would be as accessible as YNAB, allowing me to budget to the last penny.
I find Excel spreadsheets confusing, other budgeting software programs are usually a mess of numbers, that is if my screenreader is even able to read them at all.
Even when contacting YNAB support, they are always willing to help, so, really, if I can spend £100 in a pub for a meal for me and my family and friends, then I can surely pay YNAB subscription.
