Hotel cancelled breakfast provided with the room costs

We booked a hotel several weeks ago and looked for one which described it provided breakfast as part of the overnight stay costs.

This stay is for 3 nights starting tomorrow night (04/11/2021).

Yesterday morning we received an email from them stating that due to staff self isolating they are on skeleton staff and now will not provide breakfast. I have emailed them describing that we selected them as we were looking for a hotel who provided breakfast as standard and asked if they are providing a breakfast in another way or are they reimbursing any amount of our stay as the full service we expected will not be fulfilled but I am yet to receive a reply.

Does anybody know if they are able to just cancel breakfast or do we have any rights in this?

Thank you.

Yes, you have rights, but I would give them a chance to reply first.

They are certainly able to cancel breakfast as there may be circumstances where they are simply unable to provide it - as seems to be the case here.

If you've already paid for the breakfast - it being included in the room price - you should be able to get some kind of partial refund at the very least.

It will depend to some degree how it was promoted/described... if its room + breakfast/B&B then there should be a partial refund... if its room + free breakfast or some promotion about free breakfast if you book 3 nights etc then you are not on as strong a grounds.

Ultimately see what they say in the first place, at least they appear to be a responsible employer with people being off rather than some who instructed staff to delete the NHS Covid app to avoid being pinged etc.

You will be entitled to a refund of the cost of breakfast, but you can't force them to provide a breakfast service.  Check their price difference between room only and B&B to ensure you get a full refund.
They have explained why they can't provide breakfast and are acting sensibly.

Can they not get something delivered each morning from a local Cafe? Otherwise they can refund you the cost and you can get a Maccy on Uber.
  • Thank you all for your responses.

@Sandtree the reservation is described as "Double room-Ensuite – Breakfast Included", it is not a promotion or anything it's the same if booking for only 1 night.

    Breakfast for 2 people

Breakfast is included in your stay

@TELLIT01 On Hotels.com where I booked it they do offer stays with and without breakfast, with 2 different prices so there is a difference. Thank you.

I will wait until we arrive tomorrow and if I still haven't had a response to my email I will ask at reception there.

It's a good thing that they are a responsible employer and dealing with their staff isolation correctly. I just don't want to be out of pocket.

    Thanks again.

If the hotel suggested MacDonalds for anything it would be enough for me to cancel my booking!
  • Just do a bit of Googling now to find a local alternative, unless you are in the middle of nowhere I doubt you are going hungry.

It's not so much the fact we will go hungry. it's the fact we've paid for 3 breakfasts for 2 people. I don't want to lose out on the money spent on the breakfast. The email they sent me had nothing in it regarding any alternative it simply says, "No Breakfast will now be available".
  • I am sure something can be sorted tomorrow when you get there, they probably just wanted to rush the message out first and will deal with it in more depth once you are in attendance.
