Smart meters DO cost money to run

If you plug your gizmo in in order to see your consumption, etc, then that uses electricity. Agreed only a small amount, but I doubt whether many people use the consumption meter after initial installation, so there is no point in having it plugged in

    1. The gizmo is not the smart meter.
    2. The annual cost of running the gizmo is around £1.
    3. So far this year, my gizmo has twice let me spot that the freezer door had been left open.

The gizmo has saved my bacon quite a few times accidentally having left stuff still running after the E7 period has ended
  • Ranting about a smart meter on the internet using a computer costs money too.
It was hardly a rant. The OP was only giving a personal opinion about the value of the IHD. I leave mine on as it gives me easy access to meter readings. That said, for daily/weekly etc consumption information and cost, I find apps such as BRIGHT more useful than the IHD.

Sorry, I may have stated my case somewhat over-harshly!

People are free to switch the "gizmo" off, then the cost is the same as a dumb meter whilst still being smart. Bargain!

****I just wired mine between the incoming line and the meter so it doesn't cost me anything to run.

    ****Joke comment!

TBO, I have never even considered how much that tiny little unit costs to run. Posting this message here has probably costed more :-)
