Extortion of the highest order
Options
Our energy suppler was with Green Energy until they ceased trading. We were automatically switched to EDF Energy several months ago and remained on the same tariff.
We have just received notification of out new tariff which far exceeds what we expected it to be. Both the Unit price for Gas/Electricity have increased by 10 pence to 26pence, as has the daily standing charge. Our new direct debit payment has increased by £191 per month, which is an increase of £2292 per annum and a total fuel bill of £3504 per annum. While we expected there to be an increase, this new charge is proportionally extortionate.
We live in a 3 bedroomed cottage, with 'Triple Glazed windows, a new fully insulated roof this year and a new boiler this year. We have low energy bulbs throughout the property and a Multi-Fuel fire to boot; so I'm not sure what else we might do to save energy, but even so, we find the price increase unjustified in our case.
Of course when you try to contact the company their advice is that you should only phone in cases of an emergency and other options such as WhatsApp, or Text is through and Automated Agent, who doesn't 'Understand the Question' .
Anyway, that's just me venting my frustration and anger, but if anyone can offer advice, that would be appreciated.
Thanks
Stephen

I'm afraid that you've posted this in the wrong section. This section is for LPG, Oil, Solid and Other Fuels.
Mains Electricity and Gas are covered in the Energy section.
It's a common mistake due to the poor layout of the board.
I suggest that you ask the Mods to move it, as you will receive more replies over there.0 -
The wholesale prices of gas and electricity have shot up since you last made your fixed deal. Green Energy went bust because they made a loss on every unit of energy you used. You're now finding out what the real price is. There's nothing you can do about it.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
There are two separate questions. One is the unit price - and yes, the good deals like the one you had been on are why so many energy companies have gone bust. The other is how much you are using and your question of what else can you do to save energy. For any useful comments on that you would need to post your annual usage in kWh and separately for electricity and gas.Actually there is a third point - sometimes the direct debit has you paying for more, or less, energy than you actually use. If it is off you will build up credit or debt which is a faff, though you still only pay for what you use. Was it calculated for annual kWh usage that matches yours? But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

This is a pdf of EDF's deemed/standard variable tariff rates by region https://www.edfenergy.com/sites/default/files/r505_deemed_rate_card.pdf
Only E7 day rates get as high as 26p/unit (inc 5% vat)... So check your rates are correct for your area.
But energy prices have gone crazy this autumn/winter.
Check out the EDF and alternative supplier fixed tariff rates if you want to see really expensive prices.2 -

Obviously it's your choice but most of the advice is to stick with the variable tariff through the winter and look at options in March/April 2022.And £3500/yr at 26p/kWh is 13000kWh/yr which is quite a lot of electricity.N. Energy costs have increased. In 182 days (6 months) November 2020 to April 2021 I used 1991 kWh electricity and paid £295.17. The same amount of energy from November 2021 to April 2022 is forecast to cost me £445.36 at the OFGEM capped rate as applied to me by EON Next. That is a 50.88% increase. Is this extortion of the highest order? Or just reality? My only consolation is that I am on a fixed gas tariff until 1 April 2022 with SSE (owned by OVO) at 3.11p/kWh

You weren't switched, you were transferred under the Ofgem SOLR process and then have had,as you say several months to do further comparisons and switch accordingly, you have elected not to do so.
Lastly what, out of curiosity leads you to the conclusion that your price increases are any less justified than thousands of others?,myself included.
Wether you live in a pit or a palace isn't the issue here it's your tariff cost, mines has more than doubled for example since Symbio folded, cant say I'm overjoyed about that but we are where we are.

I'd suggest that the basis of this thread was in fact a misunderstanding. Nobody will be paying 26p/unit for electricity AND GAS as suggested, so all the numbers are based on a simple mistake.I'm in the process of transferring from my former now bankrupt supplier to the capped tariff. I'm looking at around a 50% rise in electricity prices, definitely not 200% as stated.I suspect that this thread wouldn't have happened if EDF were actually speaking to their customers and/or communicating better.1
