Where's the double negative here ?
"We've done a couple or so of the extra cost speciality restaurants, but would never have felt the selection of meals, either in table service dining rooms or buffet was insufficient had we chosen not to."
There we go, highlighted the two (aka double) negatives

Sorry, I don't see the double negative contradiction.
A relative was head of English at a large state school, and senior exam board examiner, so I'll ask for a second opinion.

Its not a contradiction but rather than having the double negative "We never have felt the selection of meals was insufficient" it could have been written without the two negatives "We felt the selection of meals was sufficient"... ie exactly what I said and you criticised as gross understatement.

    Here's the response I received -
"The sentence is rather complex, but I don't see a glaring double negative. I think the confusion may be to do with the the meals not being insufficient...in other words they were sufficient so that is perhaps why someone has picked up on it. Technically the jury is out."

Before everybody rushes to give the OP advice on cruises, a heads-up that the question was asked over a year ago and the OP hasn't logged on for a couple of months.

Go on a short 3 or 4 day cruise first from the UK. You will get the feel of what it would be like to book longer.
MSC do 3 and 4 night cruises from Southampton, the Virtousa is a stunning newish ship and they are known to have some of the lowest prices in the industry. My wife takes her mum once a year with them.
example, 3 nights to gurney, somewhere in France and back to Southampton, balcony, drinks package, buffet and main dining room included less than £300 each
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
