Company charging me £28 to deliver replacement for damaged goods

Hi,
I hope someone will be able to give me some consumer advice.
I ordered some flooring from an online company but when the boxes were delivered I noticed afterwards one was damaged and the flooring inside was too.
I called them and they said they'd send out a replacement box but after several weeks nothing arrived.
After three phonecalls I've now been told the courier tried to deliver to me but no one was in and I must pay £28 if I want them to deliver again.
I am fuming because no such attempt was made as I work from home so I was in and the courier didn't leave a card or tried to text/call me either.
I've asked for proof they tried to deliver it which I'm waiting to see.
Are companies allowed to hold customers to ransom like this especially as it's to replace damaged goods that were delivered to me.
I need this box as without it there might not be enough flooring.
Thanks in advance

I don't think they are trying to hold you to ransom. It's positive that they have agreed to replace the box and have tried to do so. However they (not you) have a problem with their subcontractor.
You don't need proof they tried to deliver it, you need that box in your driveway.
Don't get involved in the issues between the company and their courier. Just remind them you are still waiting but your patience is running out.
Is this flooring you could buy from somewhere else if necessary? It might be that in spite of what they have told you they do not have any replacement in which case they are allowed to refund the cost of the pack instead.0 -
Have you sent the damaged pack back, or have they said you keep it or dispose of it?0
