Huawei vs Argos

I bought the P40 Lite from Argos and it doesn't do Google play, although this wasn't clear. Regardless I can't get some apps installed as they are not available using the Huawei search. 
Argos aren't interested and Huawei said the apps will come one day if people complain enough. 
Am I covered with credit card sec 75 that the product is not fit for purpose?

No chance.

First part of the Argos description says 'The HUAWEI P40 Lite comes with the HUAWEI AppGallery and is not compatible with Google Play Store and Services.'

It is fit for purpose, just not your purpose. Big difference. The Google Play Store will only return when the USA lifts the ban.

As above, it's fit for purpose, just not what you need it for.  I'm afraid you should have done some more research.

You didn't order it online recently, by any chance? If so, there may be an avenue open to you.

It's trivial to add the Google Play store to a device that doesn't come with it.

Google "P40 Lite google play"

But stop buying cheap, crap, phones from China, they're tainted.

The product is fit for purpose, it does what it should do, it is as described. You are not entitled to use S75 and have no recourse via consumer rights legislation.

Source please - Seeing as the vast majority of phones are Chinese made?

You could say its Trumps fault, before his friends at Apple told him to ban Google etc from new Huawei phones they used to get all the apps.

There are other "stores" out there. For many apps the APK can be downloaded, including the Google play Store which is just an app, and installed outside of the store.

Huawei phones have got lots of good reviews including the ones without Google play.  The p40 is a high end phone so hardly cheap.
