Problem with AMEX via mobile payment at one specific place...?

For the record i've chipped and pinned my card long ago. We're probably in year 2 of me having it now.

I use Samsung Pay and pay for most things via this method.

This morning I took my wifes car when I went out and fuelled up at a local Shell garage on my way back. Paid via Samsung Pay using my AMEX card - all good, job done.

Just now i've been to another (different) local Shell garage. Fuelled up my own car & went to pay - rejected, twice. I didn't have any physical cards with me so switched to my HSBC debit card in Samsung Pay and paid - accepted first time.

He questioned me whether I have used chip & pin on the card, I questioned him whether they accept AMEX - yes on both counts.

Then it triggered a memory - I remember having trouble in the past at this particular station with AMEX via Samsung Pay. I've not been to it for a while as Texaco has been cheaper for a good few months so I've been going there but now that they're the same price I've gone back to Shell.
