I used a silicone type material which worked to good effect on a holed water butt, had to leave it to dry for a good 24hrs, its called Dicht - fix.Used a piece of plastic over the hole then built up the silicone around the plastic.

We use the big blue 200+ litre barrels , you can often find them on FB for under a tenner.  Got fed up with the diy store ones splitting which they are prone to if they freeze when full of water.
Fit an outdoor brass tap to it & you've got a water butt for life.

I'd second this, if you don't mind the blue, or can paint/hide it.  I have a couple which are 20 years old and going strong.
Drill a big hole in the top which is a snug fit for the downpipe (or feed pipe if you're using one one those automatic diverters), and drill a hole that a brass garden tap will self-tap (no pun intended) into near the bottom, and it's also gnat-proof, so no larvae in the water.
