I've no idea but I suspect it is because their system is geared up for more than just paypal payments so they use a one size fits all system.

A tickbox to ship to the paypal address would be convenient - but if you want something shipped somewhere else there needs to be an obvious way for that too.

Had several companies do the same. Need to register and enter address etc.  It did seem strange, just ship to the Paypal
address. Surely they should not be shipping elsewhere?

Had a similar issue tonight though. Computer part bought on Amazon a while back thats faulty but still under warranty. Amazon
links to the manufacturer for warranty so I follow the link and find a website that does not work very well.
Goto web chat and a helpful guy asks for the item serial and purchase details. Send them the Amazon invoice and then asks
for my name and address...  Its on the invoice in 3 places. Nope I still need to enter my details in the web chat.

I put my address and put UK at the end just in case and he then asks what country is the UK in... Then goes on about the
country code for my phone number...

To be fair though he was polite and got the job done, just seemed silly asking for my details when it was on te invoice provided.

Blame computers with a yes/no system or where boxes cannot be left empty?

In the past when i was selling quite a bit I would always ask the buyer to confirm their address.

I order things to be delivered to a number of places - not only have I had to split my time over two residences recently and sent to both depending on where I am at the time, in the past I've ordered things to be sent to me at work or on behalf of relatives and had it dispatched directly to them. There's no issue for the customer with specifying separate delivery and billing addresses, and I'd tend to avoid companies that didn't allow this functionality.
I don't know exactly how paypal works, but if paying directly by debit or credit card the retailer is slightly more liable to take the hit in cases of fraud if they have dispatched to somewhere other than the billing address as the card companies have rules around this, but I imagine it's a commerical decision to offer the facility. I suspect the requirement to register and enter address etc is more so that the company gets you onto a mailing list than for other purposes.

I would assume like soolin said that it's a system thing - presumably the system takes the info from the address field to populate the address label/packing slip/whatever exactly they need for their records, and isn't integrated with PayPal because they have several payment methods available.

Because you may not want it shipped to your Paypal address and you are simply using Paypal as a means of payment, in the same way you would a debit or credit card.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

A simple tick box or message stating goods will be sent to (address)  I have bought from many sites that do not ask for lots of details
if using paypal. You pay and it arrives at the registered address or you register an account and change the address.

I have never ever had anyone ask me for my address again and this house gets a ton of parcels on a weekly basis.

In fact most hate shipping to anything other than the confirmed Paypal address

When I had a very rare return a few months ago, Very problematic seller, they tried to get me to send it to a different address. A quick call to Paypal confirmed that if anything goes wrong I wouldn't be covered so refused and shipped it to the confirmed address.

There are some where you can tick a box. Checkout pages need standardising, in my opinion.
Some sites have 4 or 5 pages before you've finished your order, others are one click.

One site I use I regularly miss their last confirmation page, having already confirmed everything twice it's understandable that I forget.
