Improving credit score?

My credit score with Experian is 158 of out 1000 which makes me high risk, yet all my accounts and bills show as paid, only paid CC bill late once.

I applied for a bank account and was told I was turned down by scoring only, I never had any adverse information against me.

So how do I get rating up if I never pay bills late?

  • Are you on the electoral roll? This will form part of any decisions as will if you are working, how much you earn, how long you have lived at a particular address and how long you have been in your current job.

Apply for a bank account with a Solo card and no overdraft to start yourself off - the Natwest Step account is easy to apply for online. You can then build a relationship with your bank and over time upgrade your account to one with a debit card etc.

Should have said, I have a few accounts here and there, have a Clydesdale but live in England now, where I have a Maestro card and a £1000 overdraft but almost £3000 in credit, and a Halifax basic account, Natwest opened me an step account then closed it saying something dodgy was on my history. have a basic TSB and RBS account as well.

I did try putting my money between the 3 ie, pay 400 into each then use each even for small things then put money in a few days later so im never overdrawn.

Doesnt seem to be doing much difference.
  • You need to get hold of your credit reports asap then if Natwest have mentioned something.

  • Tried Experian and my credit score is 158, but cant find any defaults or anything, and only the credit card bill I paid late once.

    So im still confused.
  • Being on the voters roll scores you mega points when it comes to credit. It's probably one of the biggest points-earners.

Length of time at the address & length of time in job also has a big bearing on your score.
  • Well just realised the last 3 properties I was in(including the one now) no one was on electorial roll.

But saying that I even tried applying under my parents address where I am still on older electorial rolls and still get turned down.
  • The electoral roll is updated each year so any 'gaps' will be evident when you apply. The credit scores mean little to be honest - all companies have their own in-house 'pass mark'.

I would still say get hold of your reports if the Natwest say there is something 'dodgy' on your file.

Hi that will definately affect you. You need to be on th current register. I would recommend that you contact the council and get the situation sorted out.

The other thing is to check the equifax and callcredit records as well.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • you need to check all your reports and not just experian... also check equifax and callcredit..

My experian credit "score" isn't much better than yours, but my call credit and equifax are absolutely fine. Different companies report different things to different reports. I'd go with the advice of checking all 3 to get a more accurate picture of how they stand.
