Exterior house paint colour recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a masonry colour that they’ve used that looks particularly good?

The one which is several shades lighter than the original preference

Look around the local area and see what is commonly used.  But don't copy the neighbours.

I always like Sandtex Sandstone as being a slightly more sophisticated magnolia.

My pet hate is white houses with white windows and doors.  I like a significant contrast.

And cold steely greys, no.  Please no.  Especially ones that look like undercoat.

We had a chap who worked at a small airport who lived near us. He moved locally a couple of times. His houses always ended up being painted what we called 'Aircraft hangar grey'........

We had a neighbour who worked for BT.  Much of his woodwork and doors ended up painted in 'British Telecom Yellow'.  A strange coincidence . .

A pet hate is that orangey-red colour that a lot of victorian redbrick terraces end up painted with

    Anything but grey.

Ugh, my house is grey. I hate it. There are hundreds of similar type houses in my area and many are painted with bright colours. The people who owned it before me could have picked almost anything and it would have been in keeping with the local area. They went with grey...

We had a Sandtex called honey, which eventually faded, but was still lovely and Terra cotta in the back. We've had to redo this year, repairing some damage and chose buttermilk.

Our neighbours have also done theirs in something called violet white, but it's come out much paler than they hoped.

Our close of eight houses would look better if we all had different shades. Too many boring white.

  • Sandtex Oatmeal is a very nice warm slightly creamy colour, but not too yellow. My house looks good in it. Think about what the colour has to harmonize with - window frames, external doors, roof tile colour, and colour of fences. Don't use a cheap paint, Sandtex is reckoned to be one of the best. Put two coats on at least.

There are different textures depending on the type of surface and you need the right one. Think of the basic colour you want then get some small samples of a few colours near to it. Paint the samples on the wall near your front door and every time you go in/out check them out. Ask people who come to the door what they think (yes they will think you crazy). Don't Ask Amazon delivery drivers as they don't stop for anything.
