Failed credit check for £17 a month phone bill.

Options
I tried to apply for an EE £17 a month SIM ONLY deal and failed the credit check. I have had 2 mortgages previously and always paid on time. My current contract is £20 a month that I have had for years with THREE.  I am unemployed at the moment and I have never had a job in the UK. I worked abroad for the last 12 years. I applied for this phone contract on an HSBC card that I have only had open for 2 months, could that be it? I didn't think it would be a problem because that account has had £150K+ go through it since it has been opened. My investment portfolio is 1 million USD+ but I am sure this does not come up on a credit check.

I passed the credit check for 2 iphones last month with my Barclays account that I have had for years. My credit score is 979.

Is it worth to try with my Barclays account or has the 2 Iphones and no income caused a problem?

Many thanks,

It's nothing to do with the card to tried to pay with or your credit score.

It's almost certainly being unemployed and a thin or poor credit history.

Rather than guessing get access to your credit files with each of  with Experian, Equifax & Transunion using the following free services:

    https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/tag/credit-club/
    https://www.clearscore.com/
    https://www.creditkarma.co.uk/

It is possible that your general UK credit files are thin due to the time abroad. Checking the files will make that clear and will also show if your HSBC account is reporting yet.

I did get a report and it does show my hsbc account so that is not an issue. I think perhaps it is due to me not having a job and a mortgage. The credit report only has 3 items. The score is 979.

I don't  really see what risk there is for EE, I'm just wanting to use their network, worst that will happen is I don't pay for a month and they cut me off.

I'll try to sort it out in store but I would imagine they cannot override the credit check.

Your score is high because your file is thin, and therefore your risk to the lender is high. And not being employed sends your risk through the roof.

Remember to check all three files above to ensure what little that does appear is correct.

Report or reports? Did you check all three? They won't always have the same information. Some may have errors, some companies don't report to all three.

The score isn't relevant. Lenders don't see it. Lenders look at the data on your report and do their own scoring. Plenty of people get turned down for credit with a 900+ Experian score (including a friend of mine) because lenders have different assessment criteria to the credit referencing agencies.

Setting up contracts for people who are unemployed is the opposite of sense.

Did you read the post? I have to say, I'm kinda surprised that it's worth the time to shop around for someone with that amount of money.

My landlady has relatively high income, she has been paying a mortgage on a big house for a few years and she got rejected for an EE contract as well. :) She doesn't have any credit card though. I told her she should get at least one but she doesn't want any. She argued with EE, how is that possible, etc., and they eventually apologised and opened the account for her.
