Cost to hang internal doors

Ongoing saga with a company who have been in doing other works for us, which included changing certain internal wooden doors over for new ones.

We asked if they could also do the remaining doors so they all match, as an extra.  We have sourced the doors, handles and hinges, so this is fitting only.  They are unfinished oak veneer doors (we will stain and oil ourselves), three hinges, no particular complications other than maybe needing to recut where the latches go into the frames.  We are in north London so I know we pay a premium.

Their quote is £300 labour per door which seems outrageous, given what I have found on Checkatrade and MyJobQuote has a very top end of the range at just under £100.  I've also spoken to my dad who used to be a carpenter, and has mates/mates' children who still are working carpenters/shopfitters, and they are shocked at over £100 but they are not in London (which means sadly I can't get them to do it!).

They are arguing that everything is more expensive now and we will not find anyone else to do it for cheaper.

I have not looked around for other "real" quotes yet, as this has only just come up today, so just wanted a sense check before I do.

Thanks!

  • Yes £300 per door is a stupid price even for London. Things are more expensive but the cost of labour has only gone up because the trades are cashing in on these shortages. It would be cheaper to get your dad or his mates down & put them up in a B&B. Get another quote. As a guide in the midlands it is about £60/£70 per door I would think you would pay double that.
  • I charge £50 a door can’t get no more in my area, I would say for your area £80 max!
is there any reason why your Dad can’t fit them?
    £300 is taking the P!
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'

I had all our 15 internal doors changed last year. The doors and fittings (handles etc) were £200 each, and the local carpenter charged £1,000, about £65 a door. But, it's a fairly new house and the doors were standard size, and the frames around the door were all pretty true, so he had few adjustments to make. They look great.
  • Labour only £70/80 per door in my area . To do them properly on my own I can get 3 or 4 a day done and finished .
  • Thanks everyone, you've all confirmed what I thought so I will (fairly politely) tell them where to go with that!

Dad's in his 70s now, and has also mentioned how much he always hated doing doors, so whilst I am putting him to work on fixing shelves next time they visit I don't want to ask him to do this too with heavy doors up and down the stairs.

Mind you, for the amount the current company want (4 x £300 = £1,200!!!) I could probably send a chauffeur to pick up his mate's son from our home town and put him up at the Ritz!

Think it's time to get some other quotes then if the current lot won't budge, but I'm more confident in doing that now so thank you all very much, I really appreciate it.

  • I paid 55 per door.

The highest quote I had was 70 and the lowest 45.

We have just had all our doors replaced.  Labour-only cost was £100 per door.  That included replacing all the architraves, jambs etc. (I have no idea of terminology) and skirting boards - on the hall side only (we left the actual rooms untouched to be done next year).

All doors (12) were fitted with 3 ball bearing hinges, new handles, new stops, new latches etc..  3 doors had locks (bathroom en suite and downstairs toilet) and one had a glazed panel.

  • I just wanted to come back with an update.

The company were adamant that £300 is the going rate but we managed to agree on £150 per door in the end.  Even though that still seems a bit high, I accepted it on the basis that they were already on site and would get them done that same week as the final part of their work for us, then pack up and give me my house back as they've been here for five months with all the mess and disruption that entails.  So I agreed to this as a "convenience fee" to save me the trouble of getting quotes, waiting for someone to be available and dealing with yet more workmen traipsing through the house.  The doors are now done, they look great and my house is blissfully quiet!

Thank you all for the confidence to halve the initial quote, £600 saved!
