I spoke about Storage Heaters and Fischer heating a few weeks ago.
A particular storage heater was recommended.  I can't remember and I am unable to find the actual forum.
Sorry to.bring this up again
Help.would be appreciated.

Bear in mind that any new NSH must be Lot 20 compliant and will require wiring to your peak rate circuit as well as the existing cheap rate one: this is to power the boost facility. This will mean extra costs to wire them to both circuits.
I suggest you consider using reconditioned NSH's instead, which will be a straight swap for the existing units, utilising the existing wiring.

Thank you.  I had not thought of that. A reconditioned one would defeat the purpose of changing my existing heater.  The current heater works but because it is old I reckon it will not be as effective as a new more up to date one.

  • The only thing a storage heater can really do wrong is to leak heat so it makes the room too hot after it has been charged up at night and in the morning then runs out of heat at some point so you are either too cold in the evening or you have to boost the heating with more expensive day rate electricity.  If that sounds like your current heater then it is worth replacing; otherwise it probably isn't.

Not necessarily: Dimplex Quantum can run from a single 24h supply, but woe betide you if you don't programme it correctly so that it follows your meter's off peak times.

Thanks for your responses. I am confused as I am
now concerned about the costs of running the new heaters.
Currently my economy 7 use is about 75% of my bill total. If I increase the day which these heaters consume my bill is going to rocket.  I am elderly and therefore on a fixed income.  On the other hand I need to be warm...I don't have a fire so my heating is depending on the storage heaters. One has got a fan which I only use it if the weather is particularly cold..Sue

You will be able to use your new heaters on E7, just like your old ones.
What they will have, which you old ones don't is a built in "boost" heater so that if you run out of stored heat you can top up with daytime electricity. You shouldn't need to use this boost heater but it is there in case of an unexpected cold snap, or an overnight power failure, or a change in plans (perhaps you were plannign to go out for the day, but didn't)..

The only way that a new NSH will be more efficient than an old one is that IF it's used and programmed correctly then it won't waste as much heat as the old one did.
Simple box of bricks NSHs weren't well insulated, so you had to top them up a fair bit overnight to make sure they lasted into the evening.  Lots of heated wasted in keeping the living room red hot when you were tucked up in bed !
The higher costs of electricity will make replacement seem more favourable, although it depends on many other factors such as owning / renting, commuter / home all day, expected length of stay etc.
If in doubt go for a larger one so that you won't have to top up in the afternoon / evening at the expensive day rate.
