Dashcam that records for X minutes after car turns off.

Options
What I am wanting is for the camera to record for X minutes after the car has been parked (powered off).

Our old one did though the quality is lacking and we're due for an upgrade.

This feature isn't exactly easy to find in the specs of cameras. A lot will mention parking modes, but as I have found out (after buying some) this is just G sensor activated recording.

Does anyone have a model that does this?

You need a camera with parking mode, this needs to be hardwired to your cars electrics, not hard to do if your confident enough, but if you buy from halfords, they offer a fitting service,
  • Our current one uses the battery to record on for a while after the car is off.

The most recent one I have purchased had a hardwire kit (Orsky S950), not beyond me to fit, though the parking mode on this camera only records for 14ish seconds after a knock. Turns off within 5 seconds of stopping the car. It seems parking mode means different things on different cameras so looking at the spec list isn't helping.

I have no want to record indefinitely in a loop either, else I'd just hardwire any old camera so it never turned off (Ive seen some hardwire kits have a voltage cut out to stop draining the battery).

Just how many "X minutes" do you want it to record for?

The one I own, Viofo A120 records for 3 minutes before shutting down, as do all the newer ones I believe.

3 minutes would do, I should have been clear it was simply single digit numbers, maybe up to 15 etc.

    I can't find a A120, do you mean A129?

My Nextbase does this - I can set it to continue recording for up to 5 minutes after power has been cut.

Out of interest why do you want to record for 3 minutes only?

3 minutes isn't my specific number, just what neil said, though my old one does around this too. Just wouldn't want to be recording 24/7.

The A129 is the A120 successor, and yes it runs for a further 3 minutes after the engine is switched off. In fact I managed to catch a driver who hit my car whilst he was parking up next to me in supermarket car park via this.

I asked VIOFO they showed me the menu for parking duration from 30 minutes to 8 hours, though they still aren't clear if this is some sensor mode.

Is your 3 minute just a baked in thing it always does or a menu option? Our current one just does it, no choice in the matter.

It's a baked in thing, it'll just run for the x amount of time. Usually it finishes it's current recording segment then starts another for whatever period is left. When Viofo mention parking they're talking about the parking mode, which is something different, and something I don't use. BTW, mine is the A119, not the A120 as previously mentioned.

As I mentioned earlier, rather than ask Viofo, I'd ask owners on the dashcamtalk forum.
