Smart Meter - HUge difference between hourly usage and daily total

Trying to make sense of the different screens on my IHD (In House Display). I totted up each of the hourly usages on the  'Today' screen which came to 1646 Watt hours (1.646 kWh). But the 'Daily' screen shows the running total at 4.421 kWh. I accept there will be rounding errors and some delay between reading and display but surely not this much - over 2 1/2 times bigger. Can anyone explain why there is such a massive difference? The today screen is suposed to give you an up to the minute guide to your energy use to help save energy, but if it underestimates by such a huge margin, it's worse than useless. Is something wrong with it?
