How long for final bill when switching suppliers?

Options
I switched suppliers 1st October so ended up paying both suppliers a direct debit this month. I gave a meter reading to both on the day of switch but my old suppliers say they can’t use that and need to wait for my new suppliers to send them the reading.

Does anyone know how long this takes (EDF to octopus if that matters) as I’d rather not pay double again I’m November I can avoid it. I’m in credit with EDF so expecting a refund so don’t think I can cancel my direct debit or it will make it harder for them to refund me?

EDF have six weeks from your switch date to issue your final bill, so it could be mid-November before you know.
You can cancel your DD with EDF, there is no direct connection between that and your refund.

Oh! I thought I needed to keep my DD active for them to refund me as when I messaged them they just said if I cancelled it I would need to pay them by bank transfer instead? Even though they are no longer my supplier?

There is one little wrinkle with that, some suppliers have stated that they delete all bank details when a DD is cancelled due to compliance with GDPR their only contractual right under their T&C's to store and process the bank details was the DD.
In those cases they can simply send a cheque of course, but it is something non-obvious that has cropped up a few times.
